Epson C82The Epson Stylus C82 is a four-color printer using Epson’s DuraBright Ink Technology. The four colors used are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black and have individual ink tanks. The reason for purchasing this printer was the low price for a printer of this quality. The retail price for this printer is $129 (April 2003) but you can get lower prices online or take advantage of in store sales. I paid less due to having a discount coupon for a local retailer.

From the initial setup with the included software CD, the C82 has performed well with my Mac. The image quality is exceptional for a four-color printer and the text is adequate. Being a graphic designer, I do like quality text output as well as image quality. I have been quite impressed with the photo image quality also. The colors tend to have a slight magenta cast to them but it may be that my color calibration is not quite on par yet. I am working on that. [Editor's note: if you have Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you won't need to run the installer CD-ROM. Just plug it in and connect the USB cable to your Mac. It will recognize it and run the built-in Epson C82 driver. Also note that few (if any) inkjet printers come with USB cables. You will need to buy a USB printer cable when you buy this printer.]

The Epson Stylus C82 uses a drop on demand Micro Piezo ink jet technology and is optimized for plain paper desktop color printing at 5760 x 1440 optimized dpi on various paper qualities. The DuraBrite ink is water resistant on all media including plain paper and is light resistant to fading up to 80 years on various papers. The light resistance depends on proper framing of the image.

The reason for purchasing this particular printer was the inclusion of four individual ink tanks on this printer. I never liked the idea of running out of one color in the other ink tanks and wasting the colors that were left. I have not replaced the original ink tanks and have had this printer since October, 2002.

As far as problems or irregularities, I have encountered none with this printer. It seems to be an excellent desktop printer.

Overall, for excellent photo printing and day-to-day use, this printer does it all.
